This floor was done at GSI in Massachusetts. They needed high gloss flooring with ESD properties (Electro Static Dissapative). The above pictures look like a standard High Build epoxy floor, but it is not. It is an ESD Epoxy floor. These types of floors are used in fuel storage areas, chemical areas, electronics manufacturers, ETC.  The application process is similiar to a seamless epoxy floor.

Wood Group, Connecticut

Wood Group needed a high class look. They were moving into a new building that have bare concrete floor. They are in the aerospace industry, so a world class look is necessary. As you can see by the pictures, they got what they wanted. A smooth High gloss, Wow their customer floor.

Here is what we did for a scope of work to get them where they needed to be:

We diamond ground the floor to prepare the concrete for the epoxy primer adhesion

We filled in all small voids with an epoxy/cabosil paste.

We primer the floor with 100% solids epoxy primer at a nominal 6 mils dry film thickness.

We screen the floor to remove any dirt or particulate.

A second body coat of epoxy was applied at a nominal 12 mils dft.

The floor was screened again to remove any particulate.

A high gloss urethane was applied at the chemical resistant top coat with a 60 mesh oxide for slip resistance.

We use a urethane ontop because urethane maintains its color, is chemical resistant, and is more durable than an epoxy coating.

IDexx Labs did a renovation and addition to their Maine facility. They wanted a current look and needed a functional flooring system. What we did in the pictures about is a simple coatings system, but we added some design to a better look . The flooring systems above are classic seamless 3 coat epoxy/urethane system. Their old floor was a VCT Floor (Vinyl Composition Tile). The new system looks great and is very economical.

Supply Warehouse, Connecticut and Massachusetts

Epoxy floor for a Supply warehouseThis is an example is a thin mil coating system done for a local supply warehouse. Their old floors were just concrete with a concrete curing membrane. They had a lot of build up on their floors from fork truck tires. They wanted to improve their look and image.

Here is what the scope of work looked like for this floor:

Diamond grind floor to prepare concrete and to remove curing membrane and black tire marks.

Fill in any small voids with epoxy and cabosil paste. Grind smooth

Fill in all joint with semi rigid epoxy joint filler, Strike off with razor

Apply 100% solids epoxy primer.

Apply 100% solids epoxy body coat

Screen floor to remove debris, tack rag

Apply High wear urethane Topcoat

Add Traffic lines

AEROCRAFT

Aerocraft is a manufacturing company based in Newington, Connecticut, CT.

The wanted to create a good look, but had a budget to hit. They drag alot of pallets on their floors so we decided to put them on a floor care maintenance plan. The plan is simple, We simply come back every year, assess the floor condition, and coat the areas that are in bad shape. We do this because they drag nails in pallets every where on their floor. Any system we recommend will scratch in the end. They want a good looking floor. So they choose to recoat often with epoxy. This one coat solution is less expensive than other fixes and works well for them!

JP Noonan, West Bridge Water, MA

JP Noonan is a trucking company that has many facilities where they work on tractor trailers. They want a clean facility. The issues they deal with a dark black built up oil scummed floors. They also destroy the concrete in other areas where the drop heavy parts on the floor.

They asked us to come in and provide a solution to their problems. I like most flooring contractors, recommended a thick shop floor application which is common in the auto dealership industry. My client pulled out a large piece of steel and smashed a huge gouge in the sample. I was then told that they have used shop floors before and they dont work (wow). After some thought I decided to go with a non film build concrete polish instead of an epoxy coating. This polish will be different because we will have to shot blast first to remove floor scum, then start very low on the steel diamond scale to try to get rid of the shot blast profile. We will also use a special stain guard that resists automobile chemicals. You can see the results of the demo. A good looking functional system that cannot be scratched away like epoxy coatings, yet sealed to oils will not penetrate the slab. Here is what we did:

  • Shot blast floor to clean and remove scum in floor
  • Use diamonds grinders to plane out floor to remove blast lines
  • Apply oil eating microbes to remove impregnated oils from slab
  • Polish floor up to a 200 poly diamond finish
  • Apply special oil gard sealer
  • Burnish with propane burnisher

Gowans and Knight, Water Town, Connecticut, CT

Gowans and Knight after Stain Guard

Gowans and Knight is a company that services and restore Fire Trucks/Engines. Their building is on somewhat of a floor plain, with all of the rain we had this year, they ended up with about 9 inches of water flooding their office twice. In their office area they had VCT tile over concrete as their floor.  The tile was damaged and some peeled from the water. They needed the tiles removed and a floor finish installed that would not be effected by water or moisture drive. The solution is a polished concrete slab with a blue stain. Polished concrete is not affected by water or moisture drive because there is no film build, meaning no can peel. It is a very good looking flooring system that can take abuse. Here is how we did this floor:

  1. Remove VCT tiles by scraping and small chipping hammers
  2. Grind off existing tiles mastic with Sase diamatics and hand grinders
  3. Go through all steel diamond cuts
  4. Go through poly diamonds to a 400 finish
  5. Apply Acetone stain twice in two different directions
  6. Wash floor
  7. Apply lithium silicate allow to dry
  8. Polish to 800 finish
  9. Apply lithium silicate again
  10. Apply stain guard and burnish floor

Polished concrete/ concrete polishing floors are great in retail, restaurants, warehousing, high end residential, manufacturing, and many other applications

Atlas Distributing, Auburn, Massachusetts

This floor is an concrete polished floor finished to an 800 finish. Atlas has a new warehouse added to their facility. This warehouse had the floor finished with a regular concrete curing membrane which is not the right solution for a distribution warehouse. What happened pretty quickly after they start to use the floor was a massive amount of fork truck tire build up. This happens because of the fork truck wheels spin on the curing membrane finish. The spinning generates heat which burns into the floor. Using a curing membrane as a concrete floor wear surface is a common mistake made by construction managers. A curing membrane sole purpose is to keep moisture in the concrete while it cures to prevent cracking and slab curling. It looks like it would be a great wear surface, but it is not. We were referred to Altas to solve their problems. I quickly educated them on what their problem was and why it happend. Then we discussed what was the proper solution. A concrete polish starts with an aggressive grind that removes the curing membrane. We them use a series of finer diamond cuts to polish out the deep scratches we created in the first place. Approx. mid way through the grinding we use a concrete densifier. This hardens the top 1/8th to 1/16 inch of the concrete and makes it dust proof. When finished a concrete polished floor is perfect for warehousing because it has a hard dust proof finish that cannot be scratched away like epoxies or urethanes.
